The End of the Design Agency

The design agency model — built for a world of siloed disciplines and sequential handoffs — is incompatible with how exceptional companies are built today.

The design agency model had a good run.

For decades, the formula worked: clients arrived with briefs, agencies responded with concepts, production followed, campaigns launched. Repeat.

But the companies shaping culture today — the ones moving fastest, building deepest, reaching widest — are not hiring agencies to execute their creative vision. They are building creative technology companies as partners, collaborators, and co-architects of their future.

The shift is structural. It cannot be solved by renaming services or adding a "digital" practice. It requires a fundamentally different operating model.

Why the Agency Model Is Breaking

The traditional agency model was built on separation. Strategists thought. Creatives created. Developers built. Each function was a silo with its own language, timeline, and billing rate.

This model made sense when technology, design, and strategy were genuinely separate disciplines with separate practitioners. That world no longer exists.

The most valuable creative work happening today happens at the intersection of design and engineering, of brand strategy and data intelligence, of visual storytelling and product thinking. The agencies that cannot operate at these intersections are not competing for the most interesting work.

What Takes Its Place

The organizations replacing traditional agencies are not agencies at all. They are creative technology companies — structurally integrated across strategy, design, and engineering — that build lasting systems rather than one-off executions.

The deliverable is not a campaign. It is a platform, a brand operating system, a product ecosystem.

The relationship is not transactional. It is collaborative and ongoing.

The pricing model is not hourly. It is value-based, partnership-oriented, and tied to outcomes.

The Implication for Africa

Africa's creative industry is at a critical juncture. The continent has extraordinary creative talent — designers, engineers, strategists, filmmakers — operating in largely fragmented ecosystems.

The opportunity is not to build more agencies. The opportunity is to build the world's next great creative technology companies, right here on the continent.

That is what The Stecklore Company is doing.

Not an agency. A creative technology company.
